Astrid Goldsmith

Astrid Goldsmith is an award-winning animator specialising in puppet stop motion. Her work explores the impact of human policy on the natural world, and encompasses drawing, sculpture, animation and site-specific installation. After 12 years working as a model maker for films and adverts – making everything from the Duracell Bunny to vibrating slugs for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy – she completed her debut solo film, Squirrel Island. Seven years in the making, Squirrel Island was shot on 16mm with a 1969 Bolex film camera in Astrid’s garage in Folkestone. She has recently animated a paper-cut stop motion film for C4’s Random Acts and made Polymer, a 2-minute stop-motion monster movie about plastics in the sea. She is currently touring Squirrel Island around international film festivals.
