IN FOCUS
The In Focus series examines artists work in more depth, looking at a range of work. The works here are not shown in chronological order, they are shown in a juxtaposed, starting in 1976 with Associations and ending with The Girl Chewing Gum also made in 1976.

JOHN SMITH IN FOCUS

There was a time when experimental film tried to deconstruct the physical material of film, treating it as a sculpture. John Smith’s work plays and breaks down narrative in a similar way. Often using a simple voice over that comments on what you see and in the case of The Girl Chewing Gum, predicts the action. His work brings to mind and connects Chris Marker and Godard; artists and filmmakers that examine how we construct a story and how we innately trust the storyteller. Smith plays with prediction often and with our expectation, which is why Om 1996 forces us to adjust not only what we see, but how we see it.
