IN FOCUS

The nature of screenings in this as in many festivals present work in the format of a compilation in a sense a kind of mixed show where works are curated to be seen in the company of other works. For most films this is fine. But we also wanted to explore other ways of looking or experiencing video work. This section is broken into one-hour segments where either a feature length work can be seen or where a single work is repeated on a loop. These presentations occur in a cinema format where there is just a single hour to look and discover the work.

A MILLION MILES AWAY

MOON DUST

THE MUSIC OF REGRET

Resounding (infrared) 2013

Recently described as ‘cosmic story telling”, the 30-minute video includes audio transcriptions of the big bang, pulsars and plasma waves;  a morse code message from a lucid dreaming experiment; static  interference from radio and television programmes containing traces of the big bang; and the voices of individuals describing their experiences of unexplained visual phenomena.

A delicate rarity of a film, A Million Miles Away hits target where other films fail miserably: talking about adolescence traumas, romantic tragedies and such topics, require a fresh approach to those subjects and a narrative pulse that keeps the viewer interested. And in all these trades, Reeds comes out a winner.

Moon Dust, a sci-fi comedy about a lunar resort that faces hardships once Mars becomes the new “hot vacation spot,” took the artist Scott Reeder 11 years to complete.

In the 'DADDY' performance, the artist has his back to the audience, as he recounts an important event in his personal life involving his father.

At the same time, the artist video records the speech so that the audience can view his face on a video monitor. The anonymity of the audience provides a seemingly safe space for the artist, but invisible motives are hidden. Spying on violence is a kind of violence itself. The private life of the artist is forced onto the audience, creating a voyeuristic transition between the speaker and the audience. Who is inflicting this painful personal story on whom? Is the audience a willing participant, a sympathizer, a victim or a voyeur? In the recounting of this personal drama, which is unscripted and known only to the artist, what is fabricated and what is real? Any doubt, discussion, sympathy, pity, understanding, tolerance...will all be faithfully recorded by a video camera.
